Questions and answers with a top animator

Interested in how to produce Japanese anime , manga and drawing? Today, we talk to Atsushi Wada  from Otemae University‚Äôs Faculty of Media and Arts

Atsushi has won many awards and prizes for his work, including the Silver Bear Award in the short-film category at the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival for The Great Rabbit.

We asked him 5 questions in 5 minutes:

1.Please introduce yourself.
I'm Atsushi Wada, I make animation films, especially short drawing animation. Fat boys usually star in my recent films.

2.What is a course students like to take in your department? Why?
I think a popular course to study is 3DCG (3D computer graphics). Students have no experience to learn 3DCG because they don't usually have any 3D software in their homes, so this has a strong impact when they study 3D and understand how to be able to make 3DCG work by themselves. That's why 3D is popular.

3.What is your specialty? Could you provide us with an example?
I usually make animation films for cinema, and it is important for me to make comfortable movements and be thinking about "Ma", the tension produced between movements. It is difficult to explain "Ma" in English, please see my YouTube showreel  and feel "Ma"!

4. What is your #1 tip for aspiring artists?
I think the important thing is having something strong that you want to make or express through moving images. That will be your advantage in the future.

5. What are you watching/reading at the moment?
Actually I hardly watch anime or TV. I rather want you (the reader) to recommend any anime or manga, please!

You heard the man! If you have any recommendations, or questions, please leave a comment below.
