A visit to Kobe Boys Town

IIE

On December 6, 2020, the English Communications Seminar class volunteered for a two-hour Christmas-themed event at the Kobe Boys Town orphanage. Students planned and conducted several activities for children ages three to 10, including sharing stories from books, playing card games, making crafts, eating strawberry santas for snacks, and enjoying a musical performance by a group of other local volunteers.

In all, the event was a success that exceeded expectations. Students were able to gain immediate rapport with the children, and the festive atmosphere was magical. Regular staff voiced their surprise to see how quickly bonds were formed, and all activities were executed flawlessly in what was described as usually a chaotic environment. Although the orphanage was initially reluctant to accept a group of university students to lead such an event, the facility's director was most pleased and invited us to return in the future. The students shared the same sentiment and are eager to participate in any future endeavours.
